Hoopoes are very colorful birds. They were considered sacred in ancient Egypt and were depicted on the walls of tombs and temples. Today they are widespread in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Madagascar. Hoopoe lives in wooded steppes and forest glades, but they can also be found in gardens and agricultural land, so people consider them pests.
Hoopoe feeds mainly on insects, such as crickets, beetles, locusts, cicadas, but sometimes eats seeds and berries. Before eating a large insect, a hoopoe hits it on the ground or on a stone in order to kill and remove unassimilable parts of the body. The hoopoe was recorded at an altitude of about 6400 m during migration through the Himalayas
