This bird is very richly colored, mostly green. On the face has a narrow black stripe on the eyes and a sharp black beak and a yellow and brown throat. The long tail is blue. Reaches lengths up to 26 cm. Sexes are alike. Blue-tailed bee-eater breeds in subtropical terrain. Most often found near large bodies of water. Predominantly eats insects, especially bees and dragonflies. The captured insect is hit on the stone to kill and break the exoskeleton. They are sociable birds and nest colonially. The female lays 5 to 7 white eggs. Both male and female care for eggs.
